You Don’t Have to Sell Out

Please Promote Yourself

I’m going to jump the gun and assume you not only want to make art, but also be well known and get paid for it. Promote yourself until you have a status where your work speaks for itself because right now, it doesn’t. You are not Beyonce, you are not Drake, you can’t release your work with no notice and expect your small to non-existent audience to care.

Don’t Be Afraid to Talk About Money

This goes for artists, freelancers, literally everyone on this planet. Don’t be afraid to talk about money. The reason people think they don’t have to pay you is because you don’t talk about money, you don’t put a price on anything. Do you go out of your way to give people money if there’s no reason to? I didn’t think so.

Consistency is Key

I’m not one to talk, I’m very inconsistent. Problematically inconsistent. I’m working on it. But put out content at a consistent pace with a consistent level of quality. Your less likely to develop an audience if you put out one piece once in a blue moon and every third release from you is trash. Do your best, do it often, don’t burn yourself out.

Slap a Price Tag on Yourself

Back to money, put a price on your work. Make it accurate of how much you’re actually worth. Simple. Don’t make yourself a cheap alternative because you’ll just be that, a cheap alternative.
