Lessons I’ve Learned from Taking Breaks and Disappearing

Going away, disappearing, just up and leaving, ghosting, it’s the worst possible way to go.

Like everything that I’ve been writing about, this lesson applies to all facets of your life. Showing up everyday is half the battle, just being able to be there puts you halfway there. When you’re able to show up on a regular basis and perform at a high level, then you’ve struck gold, but most of us need to practice being able to show up.

If you can consistently push out content, consistently be there for people, consistently provide value, you’ll succeed in whatever it is that you’re striving for. But to do that, you need to 1. be there and 2.

People will seldom understand disappearances without notice or reason. Your clients won’t, your customers won’t, your significant other, your friends, your family — you’ll need a really good excuse for those ones. Just deciding one day that you need a break, you don’t want to do this anymore, it’s counterproductive to a successful life. I think breaks are healthy, I’ve learned vacations are healthy, but you need to draw a clear line between disappearing and a hiatus. You need to let people know where you are.

‪Disappearing isn’t a luxury that I have and I’ve had to learn that the hard way. I’ve had people say that they love me and not love me enough to let me be by myself. ‬

I’ve learned this all the hard way — everything I write gets a fraction of the impressions it used to, my podcast gets less listens, I have friends that talk to me less, relationships that I didn’t tend to adequately, plants that died because I forgot to water them. This is the price you pay for disappearing, what you get in return is the possibility of peace of mind, the hope that in disappearing you can find solace. Consistency is the key to longevity, it’s the root of all long term success.
